Vedas

The Vedas

The Vedas are considered the earliest literary record of Indo-Aryan civilization, and the most sacred books of India. They are the original scriptures of Hindu teachings, and contain spiritual knowledge encompassing all aspects of our life. Vedic literature with its philosophical maxims has stood the test of time and is the highest religious authority for all sections of Hindus in particular and for mankind in general.

“Veda” means wisdom, knowledge or vision, and it manifests the language of the gods in human speech. The laws of the Vedas regulate the social, legal, domestic and religious customs of the Hindus to the present day. All the obligatory duties of the Hindus at birth, marriage, death etc. owe their allegiance to the Vedic ritual. They draw forth the thought of successive generation of thinkers, and so contain within it the different strata of thought.

The Vedas are probably the earliest documents of the human mind and is indeed difficult to say when the earliest portions of the Vedas

Indian Vedas

came into existence. As the ancient Hindus seldom kept any historical record of their religious, literary and political realization, it is difficult to determine the period of the Vedas with precision. Historians provide us many guesses but none of them is free from ambiguity.

It is believed that humans did not compose the Vedas. They were handed down through generations by word of mouth. The general assumption is that the Vedic hymns were either taught by God to the sages or that they were revealed themselves to the sages who were the seers or “mantradrasta” of the hymns. The Vedas were mainly compiled by Vyasa Krishna Dwaipayana around the time of Lord Krishna (c. 1500 BC)

The Vedas have been qualified in four: The Rig-Veda, the Sama Veda, the Yajur Veda and the Atharva Veda, these the most important is the Rig Veda. The four Vedas are collectively known as “Chathurveda,” of which the first three Vedas viz., Rig Veda, Sama Veda and Yajur Veda agree in form, language and content. Each Veda consists of four parts – the Samhitas (hymns), the Brahmanas (rituals), the Aranyakas (theologies) and the Upanishads (philosophies). The collection of mantras or hymns is called the Samhita. The Brahmanas are ritualistic texts and include precepts and religious duties. Each Veda has several Brahmanas attached to it. The Upanishads form the concluding portions of the Veda and therefore called the “Vedanta” or the end of the Veda and contains the essence of Vedic teachings.

The Rig Veda: The Book of Mantra

The Rig Veda is a collection of inspired songs or hymns and is a main source of information on the Rig Vedic civilization. It is the oldest book in any Indo-European language and contains the earliest form of all Sanskrit mantras that date back to 1500 B.C. – 1000 B.C. Some scholars date the Rig Veda as early as 12000 BC – 4000 B.C. The Rig-Vedic ‘samhita’ or collection of mantras consists of 1,017 hymns or ‘suktas’, covering about 10,600 stanzas, divided into eight ‘astakas’

each having eight ‘adhayayas’ or chapters, which are sub-divided into various groups. The hymns are the work of many authors or seers called ‘rishis’. There are seven primary seers identified: Atri, Kanwa,Vashistha, Vishwamitra, Jamadagni, Gotama and Bharadwaja. The rig Veda accounts in detail the social, religious, political and economic background of the Rig-Vedic civilization. Even though monotheism characterizes some of the hymns of Rig Veda, naturalistic polytheism and monism can be discerned in the religion of the hymns of Rig Veda.

The Sama Veda: The Book of Song

The Sama Veda is purely a liturgical collection of melodies (‘saman’). The hymns in the Sama Veda, used as musical notes, were almost completely drawn from the Rig Veda and have no distinctive lessons of their own. Hence, its text is a reduced version of the Rig Veda. As Vedic Scholar David Frawley puts it, if the Rig Veda is the word, Sama Veda is the song or the meaning, if Rig Veda is the knowledge, Sama Veda is its realization, if Rig Veda is the wife, the Sama Veda is her husband.

TheYajur Veda: The Book of Ritual

The Yajur Veda is also a liturgical collection and was made to meet the demands of a ceremonial religion. The Yajur Veda practically served as a guidebook for the priests who execute sacrificial acts muttering simultaneously the prose prayers and the sacrificial formulae (‘yajus’). It is similar to ancient Egypt’s “Book of the Dead”. There are no less than six complete recessions of Yajur Veda – Madyandina, Kanva, Taittiriya, Kathaka, Maitrayani and Kapishthala.

The Atharva Veda: The Book of Spell

The last of the Vedas, this is completely different from the other three Vedas and is next in importance to Rig-Veda with regard to history and sociology. A different spirit pervades this Veda. Its hymns are of a more diverse character than the Rig Veda and are also simpler in language. In fact, many scholars do not consider it part of the Vedas at all. The Atharva Veda consists of spells and charms prevalent at its time, and portrays a clearer picture of the Vedic society.

Structure of the Vedas

The Upanishads and the Aranyakas are the concluding portions of the Brahmanas, which discuss philosophical problems. The Aryanyakas (forest texts) intend to serve as objects of meditation for ascetics who live in forests and deal with mysticism and symbolism.

Ensure the Perfect Purchase with Online Mobile Phone Shopping

Online Shopping for Mobile PhonesOnline mobile phone shopping, as I found amongst all the products that one can found on the internet, is probably the best feature in the domain of online shopping. As compared to buying mobile phones from a retail store, buying them from the internet offers a lot of advantages.

The first is the price comparison. In retail stores, having an option of comparing prices of mobile phones is quite limited. In order to do so, the only way one can do it is by going to different stores, which, and many will agree with me, is immensely cumbersome. The store sales people exaggerate their products, and several times, miss out on the tiny details and a customer only encounters them a considerable amount of time once the product has been purchased.

This happens a lot in dual sim mobile phones. Because of an increased feature, there are more chances of these mobile phones to sustain glitches, which could either be software malfunction, battery inoperability, and specifically, coming across problems while switching from sim to the other. Forum enabled shopping sites help the users by checking out reviews of the specific product before making their purchase.

Another thing that impresses me most about online mobile phone shopping is that there are no salespeople unnecessarily exaggerating their own products. More often than not, a customer is just not able to know what the device’s downsides are. A customer considers this as the most important part of his purchase. Before comparing the better features in two individual devices, a customer wants to know which will generate least glitches. Only after careful introspection of these factors does a customer go for the product. I would certainly give online mobile phone shopping thumbs up!

Things to Remember While Online Shopping

Click to Online ShoppingWhen I started buying things online, one of the things that troubled me the most was giving out my credit card details. As a kid, my father, and sometimes my grandfather, had warned me of the hazards of shopping through my credit card. They would tell me the consequences of losing a credit card (although I did not own a credit card myself when I was a kid), and how people can take undue advantage of it. Needless to say, the moral of all these stories was “the importance of money.”

The media did not play a helpful role as well. Every week there would be a story of a credit card being stolen, and how the thieves would lavishly spend all of the money in the account – the owner, of course, had no idea of what was happening with his account.

Now, when I did end up owning a credit card of my own, all this hype made me insecure about letting out its details on a medium where hackers loiter day and night. And like me, there are a lot of people who feel the same.

But then, a customer should know how to distinguish between a genuine online shopping store and a fake one. For example, a customer should never trust websites that are not well known. It is really important to keep a track of the shipment through tracking order number, which is provided by many online stores. These tracking order numbers allow the customer to know in which phase the product is in.
There are disadvantages to online shopping, some of which are unavoidable, but the users should do their bit of maintaining carefulness while buying their purchases. The whole concept of  shopping online in India being a more convenient and easy method is only applicable and fruitful once people become careful.

Go Beyond Geographical Limitations With Online Shopping

Shopping Online in IndiaUnless I am buying things from a high end convenience store, I have found that online shopping is better than retail stores because there is no limitation of the range of products on the internet. There is not a lot of variety that one can have while choosing to buy something from a retail store.

For example, let’s say that a person wants to buy tea. It is known that Assamese and Darjeeling tea are perhaps the best in the world. Now, if the customer wants to buy the best tea, but the retail store does not have them, the customer will have to shop unsatisfied. While the geographical boundaries are the most upsetting limitation when purchasing in a retail store, one can find practically everything in online stores and online shops.

Through online shopping India, the customer can not only ensure a wide range of products, but also the best ones. Although high end convenience stores and shopping complexes do provide the option of having  large shelf space accommodating commodities from all over the world, I have experienced that more often than not, the range, which although is quite vast, does not prove to be as expansive as its online counterparts. Secondly, several other benefits of online shopping tend to tilt the scales in its favour – easiness, convenience, an option of comparing prices etc.

Only time will tell whether the growing significance of shopping sites will override the existence of retail stores; although, eliminating retail stores completely will not be feasible, but their overall need will largely diminish.

Online Shopping Videos – The Way of Shopping Online

Shopping Online StoreI found a few videos on online shopping on YouTube the other day; and might I say, they were indeed funny. It just amazes me at times how can any topic, in this context, online shopping, be given as funny a spin to it. One of the advertisements showed a woman who, after entering into a store, tries to open a bottle of perfume to smell its fragrance. Apparently, the cap of the perfume bottle is a little bit tighter than what it is meant to be. She, finally, is able to open it; however, because of the tightness, it opens with a sound like that of a bomb detonating. The sound catches everyone around her off guard, some who spill on the ground in order to cover themselves, while some take out their guns. The advertisement closes, saying, “Online Shopping – it is better.”

Many people who YouTube a lot would have come across the funny online shopping song. It talks about various products that can be bought from a shopping site like “a used pink bathrobe, or a rare mint snow globe.” The song has been made as a parody out of one of the most hit pop tracks.

The third video, although looked insanely gruesome to be called as an advertisement depicting shopping, was of the clothing section in a  online shopping mall. Although the video was in a foreign language that I could not understand, the visuals were self-explanatory. Two women, who fall head over heels over a nightgown, start snatching it from each other, as, from what I presume, was the only piece available. The mild snatching grew into a violent rage of punching the other on the nose (that it starts bleeding), biting the other’s ear off, and tearing the other’s arm apart. The closing section of the advertisement shows a bloody hand at the glass window, depicting the mess that would have occurred inside the store, and with a caption “Better shop online.”

Online shops and online stores are become of a craze as opposed to the usual retail store shopping. The significance of shopping stores is being expressed in all possible imaginative forms – atleast, it is being used as an effective tool for enhancing people’s creativity!

Confessions of an ‘online’ Shopaholic

Online-Shopping StoreFor years, I have chosen nothing except online shopping for buying my books. Not only did I get them at dirt cheap prices, but the standard of quality was excellent. My entire Dan Brown collection and my Steig Larsson collection have been bought from my favorite online shopping site RetailMart. My personal experience with Retailmart.com has been great till date.

It was true that I had to wait for a certain period before a less expensive version of the book would be made available on some of the online stores that I would browse, but, hey, it is always worth the wait! In my experience, if you are an avid reader, you are always living at least five miles away from the market that would be selling second hand books (or the less expensive ones); and libraries do not allow you to savor the flavor of your favorite fiction for life. And with that jam-packed schedule on weekdays, there is practically no way you can make to either one.

So, what did I choose instead – yes, the awesomeness of online shopping. I even remember reading some books online at a marginal cost – of course, many of them included my engineering books that we would dedicatedly read through on our last-night- before-the-examination-study processions. If you are worried about shipping charges, taxes, and what not, then I would say you should not. Almost all online shopping sites now provide products for free shipping. Also increasing competition in the industry ensures that delivery of the products is does not take more than 7-10 days anywhere in India. So when you get them in desired price and condition as I earlier said, it is definitely worth the wait.

Online shopping – The Cartoon Way!

Shopping OnlineI was flipping through random comic strips, and I came across one that depicted something about online shopping. It featured a guy in a store, holding a shirt in his hand, and saying to the assistant: “I like the shirt, but let me first do a little comparison shopping on the internet.”
That one cartoon opened doors to what seemed like a plethora of comic strips published on the internet. Many of them feature scenarios involving shopping, and how does it relate to what online shops and online shopping stores have to offer us.

Another cartoon portrayed two guys, perhaps a bit disappointed with the rise in the establishment of various shopping sites, with one saying to the other: “If everyone does their shopping online, the shopping malls will close down and we will not have anywhere to hang out!”
Online shopping has become fodder to artists and creative thinkers worldwide.  The whole concept has gained so much popularity that people are posting witty cartoons on the internet about how online shopping has gone deep in everyone’s skin.

A funny strip depicts a kid gifting a well wrapped box to her mother. The mother, after she opens the boxes, realizes that the box contained a spider. The kid says: “I found it on the Web.” Of all the things that you can buy online, I feel, because of the absence of trial rooms and foot scales, buying clothes and shoes can be a bit risky. But, not to worry – shopping sites provide the users with a full replacement warranty. It does not matter whatever size you wear, from the pettiest to most gigantic, you will find everything here.

Artists have produced quite a humorous way of articulating this idea – a gorilla with really big feet, wearing shoes, saying to the other: “I found them BigSizeShoes.com!”

With the idea of shopping sites and online stores making their way into comic strips, it can be concluded that online shopping mall  has created a revolution around the globe, enticing people with anything and everything they need.

Online Shopping Hazards

Online shopping can be a lot of fun, since it uses an easy and comfortable platform.  Taking into consideration the whole idea of shopping sites, most of the shopping, in today’s time, is being done via internet.

Some of these platforms governed by certain “hacked” online stores have, at times, malicious software embedded in them, giving an easy route to hackers to manipulate shopping sites in their own way. This can lead to unauthorized people gaining access to one’s account, its improper usage, and cybercrime.

These “hacked” online shops are maintained to search for weak points in the browser through which the entire browsing is being conducted. The malware, or the malicious software, is then inserted into the user’s computer system unannounced. Undetectable, this malware is most prone to unsafe shopping sites and online shops that run without a valid virus detection software.

Not only has cybercrime affected the commercial side, it has the ability to intrude inwardly in people’s computer systems. Once the virus identifies the system and gains entry, the criminal can then use it to send out span emails and messages.

Most of these problems exist with operating systems that use an older version of the software, which cannot install updated versions of virus protection programs. To give the user a friendly and safe online shopping, many shopping sites keep updating their virus protection programs.

Shop Online for Healthiness

Shopping OnlineI discovered the other day that online shopping can actually motivate you to cut down on your high calorie carbs into, what I would describe as, relatively healthier foods. No, there is no scientific theory associated with it, nor is it some concept of an indescribable mysticism. I was, like always, going through a few shopping sites to check things here and there. Out of the blue, this pop up comes up, and tells me that, on a normal day, I consume more calories than what I should in four days. I would have considered it a promotional event purported to convince me of its fact, but when that pop up led me to another webpage that detailed all about ‘unbalanced’ diets, which magically matched with mine, I could not have not been convinced. I would say that this drastic transition from fast food to natural (and organic) food was a byproduct of browsing through online shopping store.

It actually makes me remember this website advertising the sale of XXXL size tee shirts, telling all the fat people that “being fat is not the end of the world.” I do not know whether the reason of the advertisement was to motivate overweight people or to enhance the tee shirts’ sales, but it definitely calls for the attention of all people who are seeking ‘healthiness.’

So, there you have it – with all the advantages of online shopping, an buying things off online stores, populating the internet, from easiness, comfort, no-queue-check-out, there is a ‘healthy’ reason why you should purchase things from online shops and shopping sites.
